Welcome to my psychotherapy practice, JEM Therapy!
My name is Jean-Emmanuel Malpas. I am a clinician with 25 years of experience in psychotherapy. I was trained as a clinical psychologist in Belgium and hold a New York State License in Mental Health Counseling (LMHC-D) and a New York State License in Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT-D). I provide out of insurance network services in English and French. Sessions are in person in Manhattan and/or on a confidential and encrypted online platform.
I work with youth above 14 years old and adults of all ages. I offer individual, couple and family therapy. My approach integrates the models and frameworks I have studied and applied over the past 30 years. It includes psychodynamic and relational, cognitive-behavioral (CBT, in particular Motivational Interviewing), systemic and trauma-informed psychotherapy. My work with individuals and couples is largely informed by the model of Internal Family Systems (IFS) for which I am IFS-Level 2 trained. In combination with Michele Scheinkman’s Multi-Level Approach, IFS helps partners reduce reactivity, increase internal healing and practice open compassionate communication.
Short and long-term psychotherapy are helpful with many
experiences, including:
- Anxiety, depression, and moods issues
- Couple and family conflicts and communication challenges
- Gender identity and sexuality
- Addictions, recovery and compulsive behaviors
- Trauma, grief, life adjustments and relocations
- Chronic illness
- Existential and spiritual crises.
As a cisgender gay man, I appreciate the value of psychotherapy as a safe space for LGBTQ individuals, couples and families of all ages and walks of life.
